• The genocide of Vietnamese people in Cambodia
• The Khmer Rouge wanted to establish an ultra-Maoist agricultural socialist society
• China reminded them of historic wars by Vietnamese people
• US supported the Khmer regime diplomatically, and also voted for the inclusion of CGDK rather than PRK in the UN.
• The genocide was ended in 1978 by Vietnamese Invasion and overthrow of the regime.

It is rumoured that the US encouraged China to supply weapons to Cambodia, to stand against their enemy, Vietnam.
